Best Local Singer, Best Local Musician: Jason Turner
It all began with a philosophy similar to "One for all, and all for one" when Jason Turner and his three-man band took on the Jackson music scene back in 1997 at the Jubilee!JAM. Now, almost 15 years later, he's the winner of the Best Local Singer and Musician awards. Turner is a connoisseur of music and has mastered the art of playing three instruments: piano, guitar and bass guitar. He is a self-proclaimed perfectionist and has made himself known throughout the nation for his songs "Nothing Town," "Hotter Than the Sun" and "Tonight."

Rocktwang is one way Jackson native Jason Turner describes his music. Southern rock, alt-country, Americana-whatever you call it, it's a genre that is versatile enough to appeal to many tastes. As evidence, The Jason Turner Band won the 2011 Bulldog Bash contest, C Spire Wireless announced in September.
Self-taught since age 12, Turner says he didn't come from a particularly musical family. "As a teen, I found music as a release to some things I was dealing with," he says. About a year ago, he took guitar lessons to fine tune his technique.
In addition to playing five to six days a week, Turner does his own booking, manages his website and lugs multiple guitars and equipment into a gig.
Turner is expanding his base and developing a more regional following. In 2010, he independently released his first album, "13 Years," available through iTunes, amazon.com, and cdbaby.com. He is working on his next CD, which Nashville-based Americana artist and producer Will Kimbrough will oversee. "You've got to keep stuff coming out for people to stay interested."
The Jason Turner Band performs at the Zombie Prom Thursday, Oct. 27, in Fondren. For other gigs, visit his website at http://www.jasonturnerband.com.

Mississippi songwriter on his way to Opelika
By David Norwood

Jason Turner is a singer-songwriter of the Southern persuasion. He moved back to his native Jackson, Miss. in 2008, following a four year stint in Nashville. In 2009, Turner started his own record label, Planet T Records, and released his first official album, titled “13 years,” so named because of his time in the music business. The album is a far cry from his experimental teenage recordings, which Turner jokingly recalls being mistaken for Stevie Nicks at times because of his young voice. Turner plays his unique bombast of country blues-rock and confessional americana all over the southeast, doing approximately 200 shows a year. He will be appearing with his band at Eighth and Rail Friday, Sept. 24.
Who were your influences when you started writing music?
Growing up here (Jackson), there's so much blues and country just in the water. I started picking up the guitar once I heard Pearl Jam for the first time, a lot of nineties rock, and it just kind of moved on from there.
Do you have different influences now or have they stayed the same?
I still love Pearl Jam a lot. I think it's changed, you know. I got into Wilco a lot, a lot of those people and a lot of those artists. I moved on. The Drive By Truckers, I really dig them. It kind of changes. I'm influenced by new stuff now.
Is “13 Years” your first official album?
I've put out a few before, that I kind lo-fi did it myself. One, I was 17 and my voice was so high and the security guard once asked when while I was listening to it if it was Stevie Nicks. I'm trying to find those and burn those. I'd consider this my first official album, where I went into a studio and spent everything I had to make it good.
Who did you record with and where?
I recorded with Kent Bruce. Jackson has a label called Malaco Records, which is a gospel label It's been around for a lot of years and my mom used to work there. I'd get suspended in high school and have to go shrink wrap CDs as my punishment. So, I kind of had an “in.” He's done all their records. He's a really good producer.
Did you have an overall theme for “13 Years?”
I didn't have an overall plan with the songs, other than what I was playing and writing lately. The way I write, it's more of a storytelling kind of way. So once it had a shape, it all kind of had a central theme. I don't know how Alabama is, but Mississippi is a lot of small towns. Even Jackson is not a big town. It's a lot of small towns, small communities. There's a lot of artists, painters and musicians who are trying to go somewhere else because it's kind of overlooked here. Without knowing it, the album turned into this story of a dreamer in a small town, trying to get out. I hope that doesn't sound too cheesy, but it just kind of came about that way…and there's sappy love songs (laughs).
How would you describe the tone of the album then?
There's some softer moments on the album, but' I'd say it keeps an even keel. I do a lot of acoustic stuff too, actually. A lot of people said, “Why don't you just do that?” But, I don't know. You got to get the Ya-Ya's out every once in a while. I want to turn that amp up. It's a lot more fun.
_____________________________________
Jason Turner's “13 Years” is a simple and honest affair, an album of 10 songs about longing and the wish to escape the various prisons of missed opportunities and broken relationships. Turner is a straightforward songwriter, telling small, confessional stories in plain talk. The introspective lyrics are matched by good old American balladry and mid-tempo strum fests.
Turner's country rock roots are on full display on “13 Years” and at its best, he shines as a capable songwriter, an original voice in a well-worn genre. The production is slick throughout the album and at times sounds a little too polished for the heartbreakers and honest apology songs that he delivers here. “13 Years” is not too sugary to swallow by any means, but it would easier to hear Turner's sincerity without all the gloss and reverb.
The stand out track and album opener, “Hotter than the Sun,” is a catchy rocker with an infectious chorus that looks back on a ending relationship with whimsical eyes. Most of the songs on the album invite comparisons to Ryan Adams, John Mellencamp and even John Mayer, but Turner's maturity, strong melodies and avoidance of clichés allow him to stake a small, well-earned claim in the shadow of those striding giants of pop and Americana. Other notable tracks are “Tonight,” “Haunt Me” and “Imperfect and True.”
“13 Years” is available now on iTunes and at Jason Turner's website: www.jasonturnerband.com.
